St.George’s 75th birthday celebrations marked by $1million donation to community organisations

Sydney, 22 November: Sydneysiders and visitors in Darling Harbour became surprised spectators this morning when they spotted a never-before-seen three-storey inflatable floating dragon.

Darling Harbour’s new big thing is St.George Bank’s well-loved mascot, Happy Dragon. Taking up its position at Palm Grove, the south end of Darling Harbour, the huge dragon will form the cornerstone of the Bank’s 75th birthday celebrations. Measuring 12m high, 16m long and 9m wide, the huge Happy Dragon has been three months in the making.

The celebration will also see a significant donation of $1 million to St.George Foundation. The St.George Foundation, founded in 1989, has raised more than $20 million to support physically, socially and economically disadvantaged children across Australia.

Commenting on the 75th celebrations, St.George Banking Group CEO, George Frazis said, “We are extremely proud to be celebrating this wonderful milestone. St.George has a long, proud history of helping Australians get started - whether it’s saving for a home deposit or holiday, owning their first home, or starting a business. We look forward to sharing these moments with many more people in the future.”

“I’m also delighted to announce this year’s $1 million donation to the St.George Foundation. St.George’s ongoing support of the Foundation will continue to help make life-changing differences to thousands of disadvantaged kids around the country, which would otherwise not be possible.

“I’d lastly like to thank our customers, employees and communities around the country who continue to support us and who have helped us grow to where we are today,” he said.

Sydneysiders will be invited to visit one of Australia’s favourite mascots from today until Sunday, 24th November where they can take a photo of themselves doing their best Dragon pose with Happy Dragon. People will be encouraged to upload their photos to Instagram using a dedicated #Happy75th hashtag to receive a celebratory birthday cupcake.
